Since 1955, Doyald Young has specialized in the design of logotypes, corporate alphabets, and typefaces. On April 27, 2009 I had the pleasure of hearing him speak about his work. The following is what I was able to process during that lecture. Enjoy!

web dudes
Hi Public,
my name is Chris, and I’m a web developer here at Gas. Sometimes people ask me what the differences are between “Web Developer”, “Web Designer”, and “Webmaster”.
Lemme break it down:
Web Developer: really cool… think internet mechanic meets super hero… sorta like this:
Web Designer: pretentious pixel jockey… keen eye for colors (but they call them hues)… sorta like this:
Webmaster: old school computer guys… used internet before it supported pictures… could get away with the word ‘master’ in their title… sorta like this:
Y Blog?
These are some of the inspirational quotes from the Y-Conference. My favorite speaker/designer there was Yolanda Santosa.

Using the Illustrator Transparency Palette
I am going to teach you how to use the Illustrator transparency palette to full effect. I don’t see many people using this palette for much more than playing around with layer blending modes so lets fix that.
This palette can be used in the same way that you use mask layers in Adobe Photoshop.
This means, you can use it to:
- hide text
- hide images
- add texture
- and possibly more
1. Create a new document in Illustrator. Any size is good. File>New
2. Start by typing up your text. Fill this text with a good vibrant color.
3. Find a texture you like and place it into your document. File>Place
4. Position your texture on top of the text.
5. While your texture is selected go to File>Cut. This saves the texture in the clipboard for use later on.
6. Select your type. Open up the transparency palette. If your palette doesn’t look like mine then you need to show options.
7. In the palette there are two square boxes. The one on the left shows your type. The one on the right is your mask layer.
8. Double click the square box on the right. This activates your mask layer.
9. Next, paste your texture in place. Edit>Paste in Front
10. Your type is not partially hidden by the lights and darks within your texture. Mess around with the check boxes to get what you are looking for. Happy days are here again.
You can download the texture below.

Student life on a Friday
…Or should I say, the lack of. But that’s okay! Here at Gas we can make anything terrible into something great (just as long as it isn’t the plot for Twilight.)

Lo’ Budget, Mo’ Problems
The title pretty much sums up last week’s Pizza with the Presidents.
Btw, Happy Cinco de Mayo.
