This past sunday [July 26] was our boy Aasim’s big 2-1! We’re pretty sure he had an uber exciting birthday with his Vegas entourage. Those of us who didn’t make it our are just waitin’ & watchin’ facebook for the photos…
*He’s off today, but when you see him don’t forget to give him some belated birthday love.

This one is dedicated to the bike riders of Gas and those looking to become future bike owners. It’s Monday and my brain & body are protesting work today, so I’ll save the full blog entry for a later time. Till then, don’t hold your breathe and just enjoy the pretty picture and funny words.

So Ross from Reviation was nice enough to give us a day-lesson in screenprinting at his factory/warehouse this past Friday. Here’s a few photos from the event. Those of you who missed out are lesser creatures because of it.
I’ve created a psuedo-step-by-step (…day by day, a fresh start over, a different hand to play…) guide to screen printing. Enjoy it.

This is a screen. Think of a screen door, but with a much finer mesh. Basically, the idea behind the screenprinting process is that you are plugging all the little holes in the screen except for certain ones. In this image all the holes covered in pink are blocked and all the ones that are whitish are "empty". Because they are empty, they can let liquids(such as paint, ink, etc.) pass through them.
-
-
Green screen printing ink. It's a certain type of ink called Plastisol that stays dry FOREVER. Like till the dinosaurs come back on Earth.
-
-
Reviation had buckets and buckets of ink everywhere.
-
-
This is a sqeegee. Say it 10 times fast. I dare you. ...............wasn't that hard was it? Anyway, a squeegee pulls the ink across the ink and PUSHES the ink THROUGH the empty mesh holes. The ink that is pushed through now forms an exact copy of the empty mesh holes.
-
-
So you see how the empty mesh holes create the ASI logo? Good. When the ink is pushed from one side to the other side onto some surface, you're left with ink in that exact image. In this photo, the ink is on the top but we are looking at it from the bottom.

This is Ross from Reviation holding a screen up. I should mention now, that the pink coating you've been seeing on all the screens is a light sensitive material called "Photo Emulsion". This is what plugs the mesh holes in all the screens. When it is exposed to UV light, it hardens and plugs the holes. Plugs 'em hard. So hard. So so hard. The yellow light you are seeing is a non-UV light, and doesn't cause the photo emulsion to harden. You can see in this image that Ross has taped the artwork to the screen. The black area blocks the UV light from hitting the photo emulsion.
-
-
This is a vaccuum sealed exposure unit, which presses the black artwork you saw right up against the screen. This insures that the black artwork blocks the light without leaving any shadow to cause blurs. You get a nice crisp clean image. Now all the photo emulsion on the screen outside of the artwork area that has been exposed to light will harden, and plug the mesh holes. Hard.
-
-
The photo emulsion that has been exposed to light is so so SO hard now that it won't even be pushed out by the high-pressure water. HOWEVER! The photo emulsion that was underneath the artwork will stay soft and thus the hose water pushes it out of the screen and creates the empty holes I have been talking about. And they look just like the artwork. YAY!

Now you can see Chris Ha's friend pushing the ink with the squeegee through and EXPOSED and WASHED screen! He's pushing the ink through the screen onto a Tshirt! Sqeeeeeegeeeeee.....

-
And the ink is pushed through in the exact form of the image!! See how excited Chris Ha is?
I wasn’t able to make it to the Reviation trip Friday, so I painstakingly interviewed all participants, and I have reconstructed the experience below for your benefit. Never before have the secrets of the silk screening trade been revealed in such detail.
Eyewitnesses described the entryway to Reviation in a mixture of both fear and awe. Majestic winged horses serve as trusted guardians. Only the pure of heart are allowed to pass. Visitors who failed to move slowly, bow low, and wait for the horses to bow in return were met with unpleasant flurries of hooves, glitter, and pain.

Once inside the building the Gassers were faced with a multicolor river of plastisol and water-based inks. “Reviation can print shirts in any color imaginable,” said the guide. Then the excited Gassers were escorted onto a golden boat. “I’m on a boat!!!” they exclaimed.

The golden boat traveled swift and true, and it stopped at a dock near the silk screening machines. Enchanted Gassers printed T-shirts to their hearts’ content. They learned the only way they knew how: by doing. Their screen printed creations were then tested in the trial by fire. Only the finest shirts of the highest quality make it through the conveyer of flame.

This is an artist’s rendition of a trial in which a shirt was found unworthy. Flames burned it right off the artist’s torso, yet the artist was unscathed.
All in all the trip was a success, and if I am lucky I will get to visit sometime soon.

the first is but a splendid misery.
I tried my best.. I mean I did have like three KO’s and one TKO.
Na Na Na Na… Na Na Na Na.. Hey Hey Hey.. Goodbyeeeeeeeeeeee. Hey!!
